Portugal was the first euro country where that period ended for the pre-euro coins (2003); in 2004 Belgium, Greece and Luxembourg followed, in 2005 it was France, and the end of this year is the deadline for Dutch gulden coins. These redemption deadlines do not necessarily apply to coins and notes which were not in circulation any more when the euro cash was introduced, of course. Germany, for example, has an unlimited redemption policy - every coin and note ever issued in the Federal Republic of Germany can always be exchanged into current legal tender. Austria has a similar policy but applies it to the last series of ATS issues only. Older notes such as the 1000 ATS Suttner, 500 ATS Ressel, 100 ATS Kauffmann did recently, or will soon, lose their value. Christian |
